Machen Florida Opportunity Scholarship
The Bernie and Chris Machen Florida Opportunity Scholars program seeks to ensure that students from a diversity of family and economic backgrounds have an opportunity to attend UF. The program pays tuition and room and board for academically qualified Florida students who are the first in their families to attend college and whose families earn less than $40,000 annually. Over 2,600 students have attended UF via the program since it was launched in 2006. In the 2012-13 academic year, about 37 percent were African-American, and 29 percent Hispanic, contributing significantly to UF’s overall minority population. Many of the more than 1,000 graduates of the FOS program have gone on to attend prestigious graduate programs or begin careers at major corporations or the federal government.
