Who Participated?

The UF Faculty and Staff Climate Survey was intended for those whose primary relationship or affiliation with UF is ongoing employment.  As a result, the survey was distributed to UF faculty (including adjunct faculty), post-doctoral associates, and employees in the USPS and TEAMS pay plans as well as employees at the University Athletic Association and UF Foundation.

These faculty and staff received a link via email to complete the survey.  It also was also accessible via Rankin & Associate's website.

"Thank You" Awards

To encourage participation, after completing the survey, faculty and staff were given an opportunity to enter for various "thank you" awards, including a semester of free parking. Please note that entering for the award was a separate process from survey submission to protect confidentiality. See available "thank you" awards here.

Survey Administration and Representation

The university’s Climate Study Working Group, which includes a cross-section of faculty and staff, was charged with conducting UF’s climate survey.   Reporting directly to the committee is Rankin & Associates Consulting, an independent firm that conducted the survey.  Dr. Susan Rankin is an emeritus faculty member of Education Policy Studies and College Student Affairs at The Pennsylvania State University and a senior research associate in the Center for the Study of Higher Education. She has extensive experience in institutional climate assessment and institutional climate transformation based on data-driven action and strategic planning.

Confidentiality

Confidentiality is vital to the success of campus climate research, particularly as sensitive and personal topics are discussed.  Confidentiality in participating will be maintained to the highest degree permitted by the technology used (e.g., IP addresses will be stripped when the survey is submitted). In addition, the consultant and university will not report any group data for groups of fewer than five individuals, because those “small cell sizes” may be small enough to compromise confidentiality. Instead, the consultant and university will combine the groups or take other measures to eliminate any potential for demographic information to be identifiable. Additionally, any comments submitted in response to the survey will be separated at the time of submission to the consultant so they are not attributed to any individual demographic characteristics. Identifiable information submitted in qualitative comments will be redacted and the university will only receive these redacted comments.  No data already protected through regulation or policy (e.g., Social Security Number, campus identification number, medical information) are obtained through the survey.

Timeline

This initiative consists of four primary phases. The first phase, held in the summer of 2015, involved the survey’s development. Survey implementation seeking input from all faculty and staff (phase two) occurred during fall 2015. Subsequent phases include: reporting of results (phase 3—spring 2016), and development and initial implementation of strategic actions (phase 4—fall 2016).

Outreach

On June 14, a representative from Rankin & Associates — the consulting firm engaged to coordinate the survey — was on campus to discuss high-level summaries of the findings from a university-wide perspective. For interested parties who missed the presentations, Rankin was back on campus in the fall, presenting the findings at two more town hall meetings, the dates and times of which are below.

Registration was not required.

In addition to the Climate Survey Full Report, college-level information was available beginning Jan. 2, 2016.

During the month of August and into the fall semester of 2016, faculty and staff were invited to join the conversation about how the university can better foster an overall sense of belonging while leveraging the uniqueness of the people who work here. The dates and times are below:

Results

The consultant will provide a final report that provides data from a university-wide perspective, including high-level summaries of the findings, and will identify themes found in the data. Generalizations for populations are limited to those groups or subgroups with response rates of at least 30 percent.  The results will be shared in the spring 2016—and town halls will be held after the results are shared to discuss how best to move forward.
